SPML Infra Goes Green: A ₹1,128 Crore Leap into Energy Storage

SPML Infra has secured a landmark contract worth ₹1,128 crore from NTPC Limited to develop a large-scale battery energy storage system at the Barauni Thermal Power Station in Bihar.

The project involves the design, supply, civil construction, and installation of a 250 MW / 1,000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System. The facility will include 5 MWh DC containers equipped with battery management systems (BMS) and thermal management systems (TMS), along with 33 kV panel boards, 220 kV AC/DC cabling, switchyard infrastructure, and associated electrical equipment.

The execution timeline is set at 18 months, followed by a 15-year operations and maintenance period. The system will be integrated with existing thermal power infrastructure to support peak load management, improve grid stability, and enable smoother integration of renewable energy into the power network.

This order marks SPML Infra’s first major grid-connected energy storage project and is also among the largest single battery energy storage system contracts awarded in India, highlighting a significant step in the country’s transition toward cleaner and more flexible energy systems.
